Kara Thompson's Professional Portfolio
My name is Kara Thompson and I am an elementary educator. My passion is working with staff, students, and families to encourage them to be the best versions of themselves. I have a variety of experiences teaching, collaborating, and leading both students and colleagues. Â These experiences have given me opportunities to work with individuals of different ages and abilities, as well as different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. I believe that all students are entitled to an enriching education and that a quality educator is the root of this. As a teacher I strive to always build positive and authentic relationships with all stakeholders and to provide an equitable education to all students.
Who I am
Educator. Leader. Learner.
I am currently a 3rd grade teacher in Canton, MI. I have taught elementary for the past five years both in Reston, VA and Detroit, MI. As an educator I have worked with many students in and out of the classroom. I strive to teach with culturally and linguistically responsive practices. I do this in teacher through the Workshop Model for all subjects. I also use Responsive Classroom techniques as well as The Zones of Regulation as a Social Emotional Curriculum for all students.
As a leader I have worked in a variety of settings and held a multitude of roles. I served as the Equity Lead and Culturally Proficiency Chair for my school. I have written and presented many professional learning experiences based on CR Practices. I also have lead my grade level teams as team lead and been a teacher mentor in our school's Responsive Classroom Leadership Team.
AS A LEARNER
I strive to consistently grow in my craft. I am dedicated to learning as much as I can about being an equitable educator and leader.
